    A new facility to study three dimensional viscous flow and rotor-stator interaction in turbines

    A description of the Axial Flow Turbine Research Facility (AFTRF) being built at the Turbomachinery Laboratory of the Pennsylvania State University is presented. The purpose of the research to be performed in this facility is to obtain a better understanding of the rotor/stator interaction, three dimensional viscous flow field in nozzle and rotor blade passages, spanwise mixing and losses in these blade rows, transport of wake through rotor passage, and unsteady aerodynamics and heat transfer of rotor blade row. The experimental results will directly feed and support the analytical and the computational tool development. This large scale low speed facility is heavily instrumented with pressure and temperature probes and has provision for flow visualization and laser Doppler anemometer measurement. The facility design permits extensive use of the high frequency response instrumentation on the stationary vanes and more importantly on the rotating blades. Furthermore it facilitates detailed nozzle wake, rotor wake, and boundary layer surveys. The large size of the rig also has the advantage of operating at Reynolds numbers representative of the engine environment

    Quantum Backflow States from Eigenstates of the Regularized Current Operator

    We present an exhaustive class of states with quantum backflow -- the phenomenon in which a state consisting entirely of positive momenta may have negative current and the probability flows in the opposite direction to the momentum. They are characterized by a general function of momenta subject to very weak conditions. Such a family of states is of interest in the light of a recent experimental proposal to measure backflow. We find one particularly simple state which has surprisingly large backflow -- about 41 percent of the lower bound on flux derived by Bracken and Melloy. We study the eigenstates of a regularized current operator and we show how some of these states, in a certain limit, lead to our class of backflow states. This limit also clarifies the correspondence between the spectrum of the regularized current operator, which has just two non-zero eigenvalues in our chosen regularization, and the usual current operator.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure

    Rapid PCR assay for detecting common genetic variants arising in human pluripotent stem cell cultures

    Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are prone to acquiring genetic changes upon prolonged culture. Particularly common are copy number changes, including gains of chromosomes 1q, 12p, 17q, and 20q, and/or loss of chromosomes 10p and 18q. The variant cells harboring common genetic changes display altered behaviors compared to their diploid counterparts, thus potentially impacting upon the validity of experimental results and safety of hPSC-derived cellular therapies. Hence, a critical quality attribute in hPSC maintenance should include frequent monitoring for genetic changes arising in cultures. This in turn places large demands on the genotyping assays for detection of genetic changes. Traditional methods for screening cells entail specialized cytogenetic analyses, but their high costs and a lengthy turnaround time make them impractical for high-throughput analyses and routine laboratory use. Here, we detail a protocol for a rapid, accessible, and affordable PCR-based method for detection of frequently occurring copy number changes in hPSCs

    Time-asymmetry of probabilities versus relativistic causal structure: an arrow of time

    There is an incompatibility between the symmetries of causal structure in relativity theory and the signaling abilities of probabilistic devices with inputs and outputs: while time-reversal in relativity will not introduce the ability to signal between spacelike separated regions, this is not the case for probabilistic devices with space-like separated input-output pairs. We explicitly describe a non-signaling device which becomes a perfect signaling device under time-reversal, where time-reversal can be conceptualized as playing backwards a videotape of an agent manipulating the device. This leads to an arrow of time that is identifiable when studying the correlations of events for spacelike separated regions. Somewhat surprisingly, although time-reversal of Popuscu-Roerlich boxes also allows agents to signal, it does not yield a perfect signaling device.     Effective Theories of Coupled Classical and Quantum Variables from Decoherent Histories: A New Approach to the Backreaction Problem

    We use the decoherent histories approach to quantum theory to derive the form of an effective theory describing the coupling of classical and quantum variables. The derivation is carried out for a system consisting of a large particle coupled to a small particle with the important additional feature that the large particle is also coupled to a thermal environment producing the decoherence necessary for classicality. The effective theory is obtained by tracing out both the environment and the small particle variables. It consists of a formula for the probabilities of a set of histories of the large particle, and depends on the dynamics and initial quantum state of the small particle. It has the form of an almost classical particle coupled to a stochastic variable whose probabilities are determined by a formula very similar to that given by quantum measurement theory for continuous measurements of the small particle's position.     Normalization of Collisional Decoherence: Squaring the Delta Function, and an Independent Cross-Check

    We show that when the Hornberger--Sipe calculation of collisional decoherence is carried out with the squared delta function a delta of energy instead of a delta of the absolute value of momentum, following a method introduced by Di\'osi, the corrected formula for the decoherence rate is simply obtained. The results of Hornberger and Sipe and of Di\'osi are shown to be in agreement. As an independent cross-check, we calculate the mean squared coordinate diffusion of a hard sphere implied by the corrected decoherence master equation, and show that it agrees precisely with the same quantity as calculated by a classical Brownian motion analysis.Comment: Tex: 14 pages 7/30/06: revisions to introduction, and references added 9/29/06: further minor revisions and references adde

    Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and homocysteine levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid

    Background: There is evidence that homocysteine contributes to various neurodegenerative disorders. Objective: To assess the values of homocysteine in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma. Methods: Study design: Case control study. Total homocysteine was quantified in CSF and plasma samples of CJD patients (n = 13) and healthy controls (n = 13). Results: Mean values in healthy controls: 0.15 mumol/l +/- 0.07 (CSF) and 9.10 mumol/l +/- 2.99 (plasma); mean values in CJD patients: 0.13 mumol/l +/- 0.03 (CSF) and 9.22 mumol/l +/- 1.81 (plasma). No significant differences between CJD patients and controls were observed (Mann-Whitney U, p > 0.05). Conclusions: The results indicate that the CSF and plasma of CJD patients showed no higher endogenous levels of homocysteine as compared to normal healthy controls. These findings provide no evidence for an additional role of homocysteine in the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying CJD neurodegeneration. Copyright (C) 2005 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Approximate Decoherence of Histories and 't Hooft's Deterministic Quantum Theory

    This paper explores the possibility that an exactly decoherent set of histories may be constructed from an approximately decoherent set by small distortions of the operators characterizing the histories. In particular, for the case of histories of positions and momenta, this is achieved by doubling the set of operators and then finding, amongst this enlarged set, new position and momentum operators which commute, so decohere exactly, and which are ``close'' to the original operators. The enlarged, exactly decoherent, theory has the same classical dynamics as the original one, and coincides with the so-called deterministic quantum theories of the type recently studied by 't Hooft. These results suggest that the comparison of standard and deterministic quantum theories may provide an alternative method of characterizing emergent classicality. A side-product is the surprising result that histories of momenta in the quantum Brownian motion model (for the free particle in the high-temperature limit) are exactly decoherent.Comment: 41 pages, plain Te
